Known as Sauron’s central fortress during the Second Age and late Third Age, Barad-dûr is one of the most recognizable locations in Middle-earth. This large-scale interpretation focuses on the fortress’s immense vertical presence, dark architecture, layered towers, fortified sections, bridge structures, and ominous Mordor atmosphere.

Designed primarily as a major display centerpiece, the entire structure is divided into six separate modules, making such an enormous build easier to assemble, organize, transport, and display. The model has also been physically built and tested by the designer.

magurean.paul created MOC-181067 as a large-scale interpretation of Barad-dûr, the Dark Fortress of Mordor. The design was developed as a personal display centerpiece and divided into six sections to make the enormous structure easier to handle.

The designer also notes that certain hidden structural colors can be substituted without changing the finished exterior. Some wedge elements may also be replaced with equivalent assemblies where appropriate.

Historical / Story Background

In The Lord of the Rings, Barad-dûr is Sauron’s principal fortress in Mordor, built near Mount Doom. Its foundations were tied to the power of the One Ring, allowing the fortress to eventually rise again after its earlier destruction. At the end of the Third Age, when the One Ring was destroyed, Barad-dûr finally collapsed with Sauron’s power.
