A Historic Landmark of Amsterdam

The Vondel Church, also known as Vondelkerk, is one of the most recognizable historic buildings in Amsterdam. Officially named the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Kerk van het Allerheiligst Hart van Jezus), the church was constructed between 1873 and 1880 near the famous Vondelpark. Designed in a neo-Gothic architectural style, the building quickly became an iconic part of the city’s cultural and architectural heritage.

For nearly a century, the church served as a Catholic parish. Later, after 1977, it was transformed into a multifunctional cultural venue, hosting concerts, events, and community gatherings for residents of Amsterdam. Over the decades, the Vondel Church evolved from a religious landmark into a vibrant urban cultural space loved by locals and visitors alike.

However, the history of the church has also been marked by tragedy. In 1904, the original tower was destroyed by fire and later rebuilt—an early reminder of how fragile historic monuments can be.

The Devastating Fire During New Year’s Celebrations

On the night of December 31, 2025 – January 1, 2026, disaster struck again. During New Year’s celebrations in Amsterdam, a fire broke out in the tower of the Vondel Church.

Authorities believe fireworks may have struck the tower, causing flames to rapidly spread across the roof. Within hours, the fire severely damaged the structure. The roof collapsed and the iconic tower fell, leaving much of the building almost completely destroyed.

Although the exterior walls remained standing, the interior and wooden structures were largely lost. Firefighters battled the blaze through the night, drawing water from nearby Vondelpark in an attempt to contain the flames.

What makes the incident even more heartbreaking is that the Netherlands plans to ban private fireworks starting from New Year’s Eve 2026–2027, meaning tragedies like this might have been preventable.

Despite the devastation, there is still hope. Donations from supporters and heritage organizations have already begun to help fund the restoration process.

Preserving Cultural Heritage Through Creativity

Historic landmarks like the Vondel Church are more than just buildings—they represent history, culture, and shared memories for communities.

At LesDiy, we believe that creativity and craftsmanship can also help preserve cultural heritage. Inspired by the story of the Vondel Church, our team created a building block model of the Vondelkerk, allowing enthusiasts and architecture lovers to recreate this beautiful landmark in miniature form.

But this project is about more than just a model.

The LesDiy Donation Initiative

To support the restoration of this historic monument, LesDiy is preparing a special donation initiative.

For every purchase of the Vondel Church building block model, we will allocate a portion of the profits as a donation to support the church’s restoration efforts.

The exact percentage of the donation is currently being finalized in discussions, but our goal is simple: Every model built can contribute to rebuilding a real piece of history.

Through this initiative, builders and collectors can become part of a meaningful effort to help restore a cultural landmark in Amsterdam.

Building Bricks, Rebuilding History

The story of the Vondel Church is one of resilience.

It has faced destruction before, and each time people have come together to rebuild and protect it. Today, the same spirit of community continues.

By supporting this project, you are not only building a beautiful architectural model, you are also helping preserve a historic symbol of Amsterdam for future generations.

Join the Effort

If you love architecture, history, or building block models, we invite you to take part in this meaningful initiative.

Together, we can turn creativity into impact.

Build the Vondel Church. Help rebuild the real one.
