4×4 Drivetrain with Inline-Six Engine

All four wheels are mechanically driven through the chassis and connected to a simulated inline-six engine beneath the hood.

As the truck moves, the drivetrain transfers motion to the engine, adding another layer of mechanical detail without requiring the drive system itself to be motorized.

Manual Steering with Cabin Steering Wheel

Steering is operated through a convenient Hand-of-God control and mechanically linked back to the steering wheel inside the cab, allowing both systems to move together.

Front & Rear Leaf-Axle Suspension

Both axles use a leaf-style suspension arrangement inspired by heavy-duty trucks.

Locking pins can secure the suspension for long-term display, helping reduce load on the components when the model is kept stationary for extended periods.

Five Motorized Recovery Functions

A single L motor powers five separate recovery functions through a system of reversing gearboxes, allowing multiple mechanisms to share one power source.

The functions include:

• Stabilizer deployment
• Crane boom elevation
• Boom extension
• Winch operation
• Articulated towing-platform adjustment

Motorized Stabilizers

The outriggers extend using long linear actuators and include additional clutch protection, helping protect the mechanism when the stabilizers reach their travel limits.

Adjustable Recovery Boom

The boom can be raised using small linear actuators and extended through a rack-and-pinion system with a friction clutch.

This gives the recovery assembly multiple degrees of adjustment while keeping the mechanism protected from excessive resistance.

Synchronized Winch System

Color-Coded Function Controls

The recovery controls use color-coded levers to make each function easier to identify.

The lever directions were intentionally arranged so that pushing generally corresponds to raising or extending, while pulling corresponds to lowering or retracting, making the controls more intuitive to operate.

From the Designer

Nico71 had wanted to create an Unimog-inspired recovery truck for some time, but fitting so many functions into the available chassis space became one of the project’s biggest challenges.

The cab was designed first, with particular attention given to achieving a smooth and recognizable shape while still allowing the entire assembly to tilt forward. The recovery equipment and side compartments were then developed around the stabilizers, gearboxes, winch, and articulated boom.

The completed project became one of the designer’s largest builds by piece count, combining a heavy-duty 4×4 chassis with five powered recovery functions and extensive mechanical detailing.
