LEGO Executor Super Star Destroyer 75457 vs MOC-278404: Which One Should You Build?

LEGO Executor Super Star Destroyer 75457 vs MOC-278404: Which One Should You Build? - LesDiy

LesDiy com |

The Executor has always been a difficult starship to translate into building blocks.

Its appeal comes from scale: an exceptionally long, dagger-shaped hull, a densely detailed central superstructure and an enormous engine section. Make the model too small and much of that visual impact disappears. Make it truly massive and displaying it becomes a problem of its own.

That trade-off is especially interesting in 2026.

LEGO has released 75457 Executor Super Star Destroyer, a 6,130-piece Ultimate Collector Series model measuring 136 cm long and priced at $799.99 in the U.S. It includes seven minifigures, a bridge vignette, a smaller Star Destroyer for scale and four instruction books. LEGO describes it as the longest LEGO Star Wars brick-built model released to date.

Independent designer Artbrix, meanwhile, approaches the same type of display subject at a different scale with MOC-278404 The Executor. The model contains 3,428 pieces, measures approximately 96 × 46 × 15 cm, and is currently listed by LesDiy at $293.99.

The difference is not simply “official versus cheaper.”

These are two very different answers to the same collector problem: how large does an Executor need to be before it feels impressive—and how large can it become before it becomes difficult to own?

Why the Executor Is Harder to Design Than a Regular Star Destroyer

The Executor's defining feature is not simply that it is large. It is extraordinarily long relative to its height, with most of its visual mass spread across a shallow triangular hull.

That creates an unusual engineering problem for brick designers.

A large model needs enough internal support to prevent the center from sagging, but the outer hull panels also need to stay relatively thin. At the same time, making the ship long enough to communicate its scale quickly creates a display problem.

LEGO solves that by going enormous.

At 136 cm long, 75457 is longer than many dining tables are wide. Its stand is incorporated into the internal structure, and independent reviewers have specifically praised the engineering needed to support a model of this size. Brickset also identified that same size as one of the set's biggest practical disadvantages. Brickset.com

Artbrix takes a more compressed approach.

MOC-278404 is 40 cm shorter, but its 46 cm width is only 4 cm less than LEGO 75457.

That means the MOC does not simply shrink every dimension proportionally. It occupies substantially less horizontal space while retaining a broad hull and a large display presence.

How Different Do the Two Models Actually Look?

This is where the measurements become more useful than the piece counts.

LEGO 75457 emphasizes the Executor's extreme length. Brickset's physical review particularly praised the revised proportions compared with the older 10221 Super Star Destroyer and noted that the increased scale allows the outer hull angles and edges around the central superstructure to be represented more faithfully. Brickset.com

MOC-278404 has a noticeably shorter overall profile.

Its design uses contrasting light- and dark-bluish-gray elements across the hull, exposed studs and smooth tiles to build surface texture, and a dense mechanical treatment through the central section. Transparent red elements at the rear represent illuminated engines without requiring electronic lighting.

Because the MOC is nearly as wide as the official model while being considerably shorter, the visual balance is different.

The LEGO model emphasizes length and source-inspired proportions.

The Artbrix MOC emphasizes a large, broad display silhouette inside a more manageable overall footprint.

That distinction is more meaningful than simply saying one contains 2,702 more pieces.

What Does the Extra $506 Actually Buy You?

This is probably the most important question in the comparison.

LEGO 75457 currently costs $799.99, while MOC-278404 is listed at $293.99.

But the additional $506 is not payment for extra bricks alone.

The official model includes nearly 2,700 more pieces, another 40 cm of length, official UCS positioning, licensed LEGO Star Wars packaging, seven minifigures and two additional display elements: a recreation of the Executor bridge and a smaller Star Destroyer used to communicate the flagship's scale.

Its minifigure lineup includes Darth Vader plus Boba Fett, Dengar, Bossk, IG-88, 4-LOM and Zuckuss. LEGO also provides four separate official instruction books and Builder app support.

Those extras matter if you collect LEGO Star Wars as a system.

MOC-278404 strips the proposition down much further. You are primarily buying the large ship, the brick-built detailing and its dedicated black display stand.

That makes the price difference mean very different things to different buyers.

If the minifigures, UCS identity, official license and maximum physical scale are important to you, describing the LEGO model as simply “$506 more expensive” would be misleading.

If you mainly want a large Executor-style ship on display and those extras have little value to you, however, the gap becomes much harder to ignore.

136 cm vs 96 cm: Display Space May Decide This Before Price Does

Both models are big.

LEGO 75457 measures 136 × 50 × 20 cm. LEGO's own specifications confirm that 136 cm length, and independent reviewers have repeatedly raised practical display space as a concern.

MOC-278404 measures approximately 96 × 46 × 15 cm.

The important number is not just the 40 cm difference in length.

It is that both models are still around half a meter wide.

So neither belongs in the category of an ordinary bookshelf set.

For practical display, a collector should ideally leave some space around the model rather than matching furniture dimensions exactly. Something around 145 × 60 cm would give the LEGO model more comfortable breathing room, while approximately 105 × 55 cm would be a more practical target for the Artbrix MOC.

Those are suggested display allowances rather than manufacturer specifications, but they illustrate the difference well.

The MOC is easier to accommodate.

It is not small.

LEGO 75457 Has a Major Advantage: Purchase Certainty

There is one area where the official model currently has a clear advantage that price and specifications do not show.

We already know much more about what it is actually like to build.

Brickset physically built and reviewed 75457, praising its structural engineering and display impact while identifying some weaker underside detailing and the difficulty of accommodating its enormous dimensions. Brickset.com

GamesRadar also completed the model and reported a build taking more than 14 hours, highlighting the Technic-heavy internal structure, detailed engines and overall accuracy while noting some fragility around portions of the outer paneling. GamesRadar+

That gives a potential buyer a considerable amount of independent evidence before spending $799.99.

MOC-278404 is newer, and there is currently much less independent completed-build evidence available.

We know its listed dimensions, piece count, design and price. LesDiy also offers free replacement for missing or damaged pieces.

What we should not pretend to know yet is:

how long an average customer will take to build it, how convenient the parts sorting is, how clear builders will find every section of the instructions, or how the finished structure performs after months on display.

Until more real builds appear, LEGO 75457 therefore has the advantage in purchase certainty.

MOC-278404 asks buyers to accept more uncertainty in exchange for a substantially lower price and smaller display requirement.

That is an important part of a fair comparison.

The Building Experience Is Likely to Feel Very Different

LEGO 75457 is organized into 54 numbered bags and four instruction books, according to Brickset's physical review. It also contains no stickers. Brickset.com

That creates the highly standardized experience expected from a modern flagship LEGO release.

An independent MOC is a different type of product.

MOC-278404 is based on Artbrix's independent design rather than a mass-market LEGO production workflow. LesDiy provides the physical parts as a complete kit and free replacements for missing or damaged elements.

That independence is part of the appeal—the design exists because an individual MOC creator wanted to build this particular interpretation—but buyers who care strongly about numbered stages, printed books or a completely standardized packaging experience should verify the current instruction and bagging format before ordering.

That kind of practical detail can matter a lot across 3,428 pieces.

Three Executor Models Now Fill Three Very Different Spaces

There is also a third model that makes this comparison more interesting.

LEGO released 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer in 2023. It contains 630 pieces and measures approximately 43 cm long, 18 cm wide and 14 cm high. LEGO's U.S. store currently lists it as sold out.

That creates a surprisingly clean three-tier lineup:

Model Pieces Length Position
LEGO 75356 630 43 cm Compact desk / shelf display
MOC-278404 3,428 96 cm Large collector display
LEGO 75457 6,130 136 cm Maximum-scale UCS centerpiece

This is where the Artbrix MOC becomes more strategically interesting.

It is not simply an inexpensive imitation of 75457.

It fills a gap between two official LEGO products.

For someone who thinks 43 cm is too small, but 136 cm and $799.99 are more than they want to commit to, a 96 cm model at $293.99 occupies a genuinely different part of the market.

Who Should Buy LEGO 75457?

LEGO 75457 makes the strongest case for an established LEGO Star Wars collector.

Its appeal comes from the combination of maximum scale, official UCS status, exclusive character content and the overall completeness of the package—not merely from the ship itself.

It is especially compelling if the Executor will sit alongside other premium UCS models and the collector value of the minifigures and official presentation matters to you.

The weaknesses are equally straightforward.

It costs $799.99 and requires 136 cm of uninterrupted display length.

For some collectors, that enormous size is the entire point.

For others, it is the reason not to buy it.

Who Should Consider MOC-278404?

MOC-278404 makes the strongest argument when the ship itself is the priority.

A 96 cm spacecraft is still large enough to function as a centerpiece, while the current $293.99 price sits far below the official UCS model.

It is particularly relevant to builders who enjoy independent MOCs, do not place much value on minifigures, and want a model considerably larger than LEGO 75356 without moving all the way into the physical and financial commitment of 75457.

The trade-off is greater uncertainty around the real-world build experience because independent customer evidence is still limited.

That makes it a more adventurous purchase—but also a much more accessible way into a genuinely large Executor display.

Final Verdict: Three Sizes, Three Different Buyers

There is no need to force a single winner.

LEGO 75457 is the strongest choice for the collector who wants the definitive official UCS experience. It is larger, more extensively documented, includes seven minifigures and several additional display elements, and benefits from the highly standardized LEGO building ecosystem. Its $799.99 price and 136 cm length are part of that flagship positioning.

LEGO 75356 remains the practical choice when shelf space matters most. At only 43 cm long, it delivers the recognizable silhouette without requiring dedicated furniture.

MOC-278404 occupies the interesting middle ground.

At 96 cm long and $293.99, it is substantially larger than the compact LEGO model while remaining considerably shorter and less expensive than the new UCS release.

For the collector whose goal is simply to own a large Executor display model, that middle position may be its strongest reason to exist.

For the collector who wants the official UCS package, it is not a replacement.

And for someone who wants the MOC but places high importance on real-build reviews, sorting and instruction quality, waiting for more customer builds before purchasing is a reasonable decision.

The question is therefore not:

“Which Executor is best?”

It is:

“How much Executor do you actually have room—and budget—for?”
